After 28 years, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, commonly known as E3, is officially gone. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the primary organizer of E3, announced that it would no longer host the event, effectively ending its more than two-decade run as a central showcase for the U.S. and global video game industries.
E3 has been an annual ESA-sponsored gathering since 1995, taking place primarily in Los Angeles. However, it has faced challenges in recent years, including the cancellation of the physical event in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the move to a virtual format in 2021. Then many of the big video game publishers started their own big events. . At its peak, E3 was a major launchpad for new releases from major players in the video game industry.
I’ve been going to E3 for years and it’s always been a lot of fun meeting people and making new friends. Of course, playing all the upcoming games has been a lot of fun too! I’ll really miss the good old days of E3, when he was at the top of his game.
There was some hope that E3 would take place in 2023 when the ESA announced it would partner with PAX organizer ReedPop for future E3 events. Unfortunately, E3 2023 was canceled because it reportedly “did not garner the sustained interest needed to execute in a way that showcased the size, strength and impact of our industry.”
It seems like that was the final nail in the coffin, and E3 is officially no more. It’s sad to see an event like this disappear. I have some great memories at E3.
