Spider Punk (Daniel Kaluuya) was undoubtedly one of the best and most unique variations of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The creative team brought this character to life in a fantastic way, added a fantastic dynamic to the story and stood out from the rest. Well, it turns out that Hobie Brown was almost cut from the movie!
While the directors of the film, Kemp’s powers, Joaquim Dos SantosAND Justin K. Thompson, expected Spider-Punk to be a success, Santos admitted that at one point the character almost didn’t make it into the final cut of the film. During an interview with GamesRadar, he said:
“It’s funny because he had to earn a place in the movie – he almost got cut out of the movie! There were versions of Spider-Society that he wasn’t involved in – but the scenes suffered from his non-presence. It really became elevated when you is united.”
If the scenes suffered without the character, why did they consider removing him from the film? There’s no explanation, but they’re glad they kept him in the movie! Powers spoke about the response they’ve seen from fans saying:
“It was so gratifying for it to be such a success because when information about the movie leaked out, a lot of people were asking online where their favorites were, like Spider-Man Noir etc. We were all like, ‘come on, you have to trust me.’ us, you’ll love the new characters,” but fans came back saying they wouldn’t. But hey, look what happened!”
Spider-Punk has become such a popular character that fans hope he will one day get his own standalone spin-off movie. There’s certainly a lot to explore in Hobie’s world, and that goes for all the other Spider-Man variations in the film. Thompson explained:
“When making this movie we wanted to make sure that all of our characters and the dimensions that they come from could open up – honestly, it was like making six movies. We invested so much in each of them so that they could stand on their own if needed. And “We wanted give the audience a real sense that they were visiting something as layered as a separate film. We were curious as we thought about how awesome it would be to work on an entire film set in just one of these dimensions. “I’ve heard from fans that they want a Spider-Punk series or a Spider-Gwen short – I’d love to see a Pav short!”.
With all the different variations of Spider-Man in this movie, there are spin-off movies that can go on for years and years to come. As of now, a Spider-Woman spinoff is in development, but Spider-Punk should definitely be next on the list.
