Josh Gad Explains Why His Sequel ‘Honey, My Kids Shrunk’ Hasn’t Been Made Yet

Over five years ago it was announced that Disney would be developing a sequel to the hit 1990s family adventure film Honey, I shrunk the kids. The film is titled ShrinkedAND Josh Gad will play Wayne Szalinski’s now-adult son, Nick Szalinski.

The story of the new film exists in the same world as the other films in the series and continues the overall plot. Nick follows in his father’s footsteps by not only becoming a scientist but also accidentally shrinking his father’s children.

One of the most interesting aspects of this sequel is that Rick Moranis would return and reprise his role! This is something I wish he had done with Ghostbusters. But at least he was officially attached Shrinked and I was excited to see him in this movie! Unfortunately the film hasn’t been made yet.

During an interview on The Jesse Cagle Show, Gad offered an update on the film and it’s pretty disappointing. He explained why the film hasn’t been made yet, saying:

“It’s a lot, it’s, look, the pain is that we were actually weeks away from shooting it on multiple occasions. And it came much closer than I think anyone knows. And some of it was really my fault and my program. And then, you know, part of it is that I think Disney has different mandates right now, but I still think there’s an audience for a real sequel to “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.” I think Rick Moranis is one of the greatest actors and comedians of all time. I desperately need to get him out of retirement. So never say never. We will see.”

Self Shrinked doesn’t get made, Gad and Moranis have been in contact and when asked if they could work on another project together, Gad said, “Well, we’re talking. We were talking.” So, maybe one day Gad will actually be able to bring Moranis out of retirement for some sort of movie project, which would be awesome. I’d love for Moranis to make some sort of epic comeback!

Here are some additional details about the sequel’s story: “Aware that family ties have loosened over time, but seemingly fearful of confronting anyone directly. For decades he fumbled alone in his attic, dealing with the grief of losing his wife. When we first meet him, he has accidentally shrunk himself and is flying around in a shrunken drone, seemingly lost in constant tinkering and experimenting that often puts himself and his family in danger. He later reveals that he locked himself away to try to invent a solution to help reduce Diane’s cancer, but he found it difficult to cope when he ran out of time. His guilt and shame are palpable. Through the crisis of the shrinking boys, the truth emerges and bonds begin to rebuild between him and his children.

You would like to see Shrinked be accomplished? Would you like to see Moranis come out of retirement?
