Zack Snyderthe adaptation of Guardians it changed the way we looked at what superhero movies could be. I’m a huge fan of that movie and even watching it after all these years, it still stands the test of time. You can definitely see the influence he had on the superhero genre.
Christopher Nolanwho was instrumental in recruiting the director Zack Snyder steer Man of Steel, briefly commented on the 2009 film in a recent THR article focusing on Snyder’s career. Nolan said of the film:
“I’ve always believed that Watchmen was ahead of its time. The idea of a superhero team, which it subverts so brilliantly, wasn’t there yet in the movies. It would have been fascinating to see it released after Avengers.”
Patrick Wilson, who played Dan Dreiberg, aka Nite Owl II, in the film, previously spoke about the film, saying that Zack Snyder was ahead of the curve with it. He said:
“Watchmen is the only movie of mine that I’ve watched from start to finish since the premiere. That movie is fantastic. I wanted to share it with my son – I probably also wanted to fast forward the scene with me and Malin [Åkerman] in the ship. [Laugh]. I needed to be close to you.
“No, I wanted to see it as an adult, as a director. I knew it, Zack [Snyder] he was ahead of his time, you know? It’s strange to say that audiences weren’t ready for this, but there is a need for such a film. You need the movies to get this dark for the Avengers to get this light. I believe it. But yeah, I love that movie.
It was no easy task for Snyder to adapt one of the best comics ever created into a film, but he managed to pull it off and make a fantastic film. Yes, he made some big changes that have been debated by fans for years, but ultimately Watchmen is a fantastic movie that audiences and fans loved.
It should also be remembered that before Snyder realized it, Hollywood had been trying to adapt the story for decades with directors like Terry Gilliam AND Paul Greengrassand those attempts would remain even more from the graphic novel. Guardians it was considered “unfilmable”, until Snyder came along and made a visually stunning film that more closely adapted the source material than any previous attempt.
