Michigan’s win over Ohio State draws the second-largest crowd ever for a rivalry game

Michigan posted a win over Ohio State on Saturday, blowing up the rest of the college football season.

The rivalry game between the No. 2 and No. 3 teams averaged more than 19 million viewers on Fox, which was the largest viewership for their game since 2006 (when the No. 1 and No. 2 teams were). This game holds the viewership record with 21 million viewers on ABC.

While this game always manages to draw a decent crowd, it may be the highlight for now given the increased interest in Michigan this season due to head coach Jim Harbaugh’s suspension due to an illegal scouting scandal.

The Alabama-Auburn Iron Bowl took second place by a wide margin with 9 million viewers. That’s still a pretty big amount considering the last few weeks of college football have been pretty sleepy. In fact, it’s the largest crowd at an SEC conference game this season.

Third place was Washington State-Washington with 5.85 million viewers on Fox. Georgia-Georgia Tech finished fourth with 5.33 million viewers on ABC, while Florida-Florida State rounded out the top five with 5.07 million viewers on ESPN.

As always, several networks do not have a Nielsen rating, meaning their viewership numbers are not reported week to week. These include the SEC Network, the ACC Network, the CBS Sports Network and the Pac-12 Network. ESPN+ and Peacock also lack Nielsen ratings for live programming.
