The film adaptation of Stephen King’s THE LONG WALK will now be directed by Francis Lawrence

The Hunger Games Franchise director Francis Lawrence has signed on to direct the upcoming Stephen King film adaptation The long walk. Substitute André Øvredal, who had been developing the film for years. But she left the project last year.

Business Insider broke the news that the I am legend AND Constantine The director is now on board to lead the project. Lawrence said in an interview with them: “I’m now fond of The Long Walk, Stephen King’s book. I’m very excited about that.”

While I would have liked to see the Øvredal version of the film, I’m sure Lawrence will make a solid adaptation.

The long walk is set in the future “where 100 teenage boys embark on an annual competition known as ‘The Long Walk.’ The rules are simple: maintain a speed above four miles per hour. You get three warnings in an hour and you get shot dead. The last man walking gets everything he wants for the rest of his life. In these sad circumstances the kids develop deep friendships despite knowing that the survival of each of their friends is a threat to their own lives.”

This is a great dystopian story and has actually served as inspiration for many other YA dystopian books over the years such as The Hunger Games AND The maze runnerso Lawrence should easily adapt to the material.

Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green MileAND The mist) was also attached to the project at one point, but after losing the rights, James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) wrote a screenplay and New Line Cinema ended up picking it up. I think this movie is still working on that script.
