The CW attempted to develop a live-action adaptation of The Powerpuff Girls, but was eventually demolished. The idea for the series would reach Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, “who were little American superheroes but are now disillusioned twenty-somethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting. Will they agree to reunite now when the world needs them more than ever?
The series starred Agents of SHIELD‘S Chloe Bennett like Fiore, Descendants‘ Dove Cameron as Broadway veteran Bubbles Yana Perrault like Buttercup, and Scrub‘ Donald Faison in the role of Professor Utonio.
A pilot for the series was actually filmed, but the studio didn’t like it, so the series would have to be reworked. Not long after, the project was cancelled.
Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken recently spoke to the Los Angeles Times and explained how he told the creators of the live-action series why their concept wouldn’t work. The mistake was making the characters adults because it just made them generic. He said:
“I had a meeting with them and I told them, ‘When you turn them into adults, they’re no longer the Powerpuff Girls because if they’re adults, they’re just three super girls who haven’t had to deal with being kids.” . It’s a completely different show.”
And in the end it didn’t work! Maybe they should have listened to McCracken. It’s funny how some of these studio creatives think they’re so smart with their ideas, when in reality the idea is terrible, and they just can’t see it even when people tell them it’s a terrible idea.
