Just last month, we reported rumors that The office could have a reboot of sorts, with the showrunner and co-creator of the show, Greg Daniels, giving an answer on the possibility that it really seemed like he was just playing it cool, and it was really something that was taken into consideration. But now he’s come out and said a reboot is absolutely out of the question, although he admits he’s intrigued by another series that takes place in the same world as The office.
In a recent interview with The Wrap, Daniels explained why he believes it would be a mistake to replicate the iconic mockumentary, saying:
“I feel like we wrapped up that story beautifully. The characters had closure. I would never want to do the same show again with a different cast, because I think we had the luckiest cast, the best cast ever, on TV, to do that show. So the idea of a reboot is not interesting.”
That cast, writing and chemistry on set was truly lightning in a bottle. He’s right that they couldn’t do better with the exact same story and just new actors. She went on to add:
“Something like the idea of this documentary crew making a documentary about a different topic. This, I think, could be intriguing and creative. But I don’t even know what you would call it. I don’t know if it’s like a sister show or something.”
He seems to be thinking of something like this Parks and Recreation, which he also produced. That series was great too. So maybe Daniels just needs to bring in some writers and directors who know this format and he needs to make another great documentary style series. I would definitely have stayed and watched!
