Leave your preconceptions about wrestling at the door. That’s what the cast of A24’s latest drama is saying The Iron Claw was highlighted today during the press conference following the film’s premiere in Dallas, Texas.
“It’s like dance, gymnastics, martial arts … so many different things,” Jeremy Allen White, one of the film’s ensemble stars, told a packed ballroom of reporters at the glitzy Ritz Carlton Hotel downtown.
The film focuses on the famous (and ultimately tragic) story of the Von Erich brothers, who brought their unique talents from their hometown of Denton to the world wrestling stage, eventually founding the infamous “The Iron Claw” movement that sports in … the 1980s amazed. The 80’s.
On why he felt it was the right story to bring to the big screen, writer/director/producer Sean Durkin said, “I’ve been a fan of it since I was a kid and I think I really connected Drawn to Kevin’s films. Story of survival.”
Zac Efron, who plays Kevin, Von Erich’s only surviving brother, in the film agreed. “Kevin had a crazy life.”
As Efron perfected the chemistry between the four leads, he revealed, “I think within thirty minutes we’re all pushing each other to the limit,” a sentiment echoed by Kevin himself, who told Durkin early on in filming . “What is important is that you know how much my brothers and I loved each other.”

“That’s how I knew I was making the right movie,” Durkin said in the audience today.
In fact, the cast was so moved by Von Erich’s story that stars Harris Dickinson and Stanley Simons reached out to their own siblings after the film ended. “After that last scene, I called my brothers and told them I loved them,” Simon said.
You might think you’re watching a wrestling movie, but in reality, “A24” is extremely gripping. The Iron Claw is a love letter from one brother to his three others. Bring your tissues. You will need them.
