James Wan talks about M3GAN 2.0 and says it will “return in a big way” and explore the universe of artificial intelligence

M3GAN proved to be a major horror movie hit for Blumhouse earlier this year and the sequel is currently in development. During a recent interview with Empire Magazine, producer James Wan teased the return of the killer robot doll M3GAN 2.0. He explained:

“It’s still early, but M3GAN is coming back in a big way. The first movie came at just the right time [when concerns about AI were mounting], and we’ll definitely focus on that for the next one. We are exploring the universe of artificial intelligence even further.”

It was previously revealed that Wan is the guy who pushed M3GAN forward and Atomic Monster pitched the film to Warner Bros. who ended up passing it on. They didn’t want the AI doll to compete with their demonic Annabelle doll. Then, Wan brought the idea to producer Jason Blum, who jumped at it.

During a previous interview with the director Gerard Johnstone spoke about the sequel and when asked if he would try to replicate the viral aspects of the first film, he said:

“I think if you do that, you’re setting yourself up to fail, and the audience will feel it a mile away. I think for me, what works in the movie and what I think people respond to is that it’s funny and absurd. and full of many pleasant surprises.”

“And so looking at the sequel, these are my role models that I’m just trying to follow, how can we continue to be funny, absurd, surprising, but at the same time make sure that we continue to belong?” of cultural conversation, I guess. Other than dance, we’re not too heavy-handed about it, but there are themes about co-parenting in the age of artificial intelligence and things like that. So it’s important to have some substance to hang all those dance sequences on.”

M3GAN 2.0 the release is scheduled for January 17, 2025. Akela Cooper will write the screenplay and Allison Williams AND Violet McGraw will resume their roles.
