CEO of HBO and Max Content Casey Bloys recently spoke about the superhero fatigue this industry is currently experiencing. As you know, there’s been a big drop in box office numbers for comic book movies, and he believes what many of us believe, that it’s the lack of good storytelling that’s hurting things.
During a 2024 programming presentation in New York, Bloys said, “I don’t know if it’s necessarily about sprawl fatigue as much as it is about storytelling identity.” Yes, seeing the same story told over and over again is getting old, and it doesn’t help that the writing, filmmaking, and visual effects work are really rushed.
He went on to talk about what DC is trying to do, saying, “I think the key, even within DC, is to try to tell different stories in different styles, to not try to do the same show over and over again and Still. I would say that Peacemaker is a very different show tonally than The Penguin. So there is no uniformity in the narrative and I think that helps.”
Bloys then shared his thoughts on Marvel saying, “Unfortunately, Marvel, as good as their shows are, there’s probably been a lot of them. That’s one of the advantages we have at Warner Bros. is that it’s not just a series of stories. There are many stories you can go to.”
Talking about The Penguin, The Batman spin-off series starring Colin Farrell was delayed due to the ongoing WGA strike. He was supposed to be released in the spring of 2024, but for the Matt Reeves-product project.
As far as trying to tell different stories, I think we can see that DC has tried to do that over the years and has mixed things up with different directors with some of their projects. Their latest film, however, Blue Beetlewhich didn’t do very well at the box office, was pretty much a paint-by-numbers origin story that didn’t do anything different or unique story-wise.
What do you think of what Bloys says here about the current state of superhero movies?
