JJ Abrams has developed a whole series of Justice League Dark related series projects for DC and Max. One of them was a Constantine series, but that project is no longer moving forward as the studio has decided to kill it. With Keanu Reeves AND Francesco Lorenzo currently in development a Constantine sequel for the studio, it makes sense that Abrams’ series is the one to be discarded.
The series is said to have been a “darker reboot” of the property, and the creative team is looking to cast a diverse actor in the lead role. The project would be “a departure from the NBC series.
Variety reveals new details about how far the show’s development has gone along with some other information: “The new show was far enough along in development that a lead actor was already in talks to take on the lead role, but sources [confirm] to Variety that the Max project [is] died. Four scripts have been written for the series, set in contemporary London.”
It is unknown who the actor was that the producers were trying to cast. If I had to choose between a Constantine project developed by Abrams or a sequel to the Keanu Reeves film, I would definitely opt for the sequel.
In the comics, John Constantine is a British exorcist and occult detective who deals with DC’s supernatural realm and hunts down demons. He is known for his fierce wit, endless cynicism, ruthless cunning and constant chain smoking. A dishonest counterculture antihero, Constantine is also a strident humanist driven by a sincere desire to defend humanity from the forces of evil.
Abrams is also said to have developed DC projects around Zatanna, Deadman, Swamp-Thing, and more. I imagine those might be eliminated too now that James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken over DC Studios. But, at the moment, there are no updates on the matter.
