MR. ROBOT creator Sam Esmail offers an optimistic update on his BATTLESTAR GALACTICA series

Several years ago it was announced Mr. Robot Creator Sam Email would develop a reboot of the series Battlestar Galactica for NBC’s Peacock streaming service.

Michael Lesslie was hired as head writer and showrunner for the show, and was previously the head writer and showrunner of AMC’s spy drama The little drummer. It’s been a while since we’ve had any updates on the series, and I was wondering whether or not it was still happening, especially after so many projects fell apart and were scrapped during the writers’ strike.

Well, the series is still alive and in development! Esmail offered the following update in an interview with Deadline:

“Well, I can’t talk about the film version, but we’re working on it for the TV series. And in fact, I just read a great pattern and it’s in great shape. Since the strike is over now – at least the WGA strike is over – we’re back to developing it.”

Exceptional! There’s still a lot we don’t know about the project, but there’s a possibility that this series could end up being set in the same universe as Ronald D. Moore’ of the show, which ran from 2004 to 2009. Moore previously explained that he and Esmail had discussed the next show. During these conversations, Moore learned that instead of starting from scratch, Esmail intended to keep her show in the same universe.

“Sam called me and was very nice, he didn’t tell me the story so I don’t know. But he told him his plans and he wasn’t going to reboot the show and reformulate it, but he wanted to do something in the same universe. Sam is awesome and I love Mr. Robot. I was like, you know, ‘You’re an amazing guy and an amazing writer, go with God!’”

I have no idea if this is the direction they’re actually taking the show in, but it would be really cool if they did. It would be pretty easy for Esmail and the creative team to build a show in the same universe. As I explained previously, at the end of the series, it was revealed that the show was set in a cyclical universe, where the events that take place repeat every few thousand years. So, the next show could be set during a new cycle.

I’m curious to see how this show will develop. I just hope it ends up being a great, well-made show.
