EXCLUSIVE: Laureate House made of sand and dung Filmmaker Vadim Perelman was hired to direct the film Marinus, We hear of the heroic rescue of 14,000 Korean evacuees by sea near the end of the Korean War.
Edited by J. Craig Stiles (Miranda’s victim) from the book Miracle, Marinus is about a merchant ship captain who, along with a Korean doctor, commandeered a ship that could carry 65 passengers and ultimately saved thousands of passengers – all while being pursued by enemy submarines and fighter jets and battling a communist spy on board has.
Against all odds, not a single soul died. In fact, five babies were born during the voyage and arrived safely at a South Korean port on Christmas Day. The captain was so moved by this experience that he later became a Benedictine monk. He has passed away, but is currently canonized in the Catholic Church. The five babies born are called “Kimchi Babies” in South Korea, where their lives as rock stars are followed. One of the couples rescued on the ship was the parents of Moon Jae-In, the former president of South Korea. Religious leader Reverend Sun Myung Moon was also on the ship. The project is described in terms of Schindler’s List, Dunkirk And Titanic.
Marinus is produced by Steve Lee Jones and his Bee Holder Productions banner.
Jones tells Deadline: “It’s been a long journey and truly a passion project of mine. It’s such an extraordinary story that it takes your breath away, and it’s all real! It is also our biggest film project to date and I am delighted that this story is finally being told in its intended glory. It shines a bright spotlight on how seemingly ordinary men can take a chance and achieve tremendous success when the stakes are so high that there is no other option. Vadim has been on my best of best list since his film House made of sand and dung premiered for the first time, and when I saw it, Persian lessons, I knew he had to be our man! He is the master of the hero’s journey and that is exactly what it is Marinus Is.”
Perelman added, “I was so inspired by this story and the script, and my goal is to give it the special care it needs so that it doesn’t just…” Marinus an exciting, epic sea spectacle, but also a dramatic character study about redemption, humanity and faith in a very special man, Captain LaRue.”
Layoffs will begin once the SAG-AFTRA strike ends for a start date for the fourth quarter of 2024, or a tentative agreement will be filed.
Marinus receive customized banking services from Banc of California. Julien P. Bourgon, the bank’s SVP Media & Entertainment, will serve as EP.

Perelmans House made of sand and dung received three Academy Award nominations in 2004, including Ben Kingsley for Best Actor and Shohreh Aghdashloo for Best Supporting Actress. James Horner’s original music was also nominated. Perelman is represented by Artist International Group. Michael J. Weiss of Concentric Law represents Bee Holder Productions.
