Tony Todd was perfectly cast as the voice of Venom in Insomniac’s recently released Marvel game Spider-Man 2! He brings the character to life in a fantastic way and I’m much happier with this version of the villain than Sony Pictures and Tom Hardy they did with the Venom movies. This version of Venom is different, but it’s awesome!
During a recent interview with Variety, Todd recalled the day he landed the role of Venom, saying, “You know, I thought I got magic calls before. I remember when I got the call to Zoom in The flash. When I first brought in the Fallen Transformers. But this was like a standing ovation for my collective work as a voice actor. My whole career, actually. It all leads to another thing. I’m a big kid. I’m a gamer too. Then everything fell into place.
Todd goes on to talk about developing his unique take on Venom by saying, “As soon as I got the job, I went to Golden Apple and said, ‘Give me your top 20 Venom graphic novels,’ and they gladly gave them to me.” Me. I just started there and tried to dig as deep as I could.
He then teased his interpretation of the evil character: “It’s a fact that people think he’s evil. As an actor, you can never play evil. For me, I wanted to underline the joy of his landing in this particular place in time. He is filled with so many human beings ready to be symbiotic: food choices and things like that!”
One thing Todd made sure to avoid before getting into character were the Venom films, saying: “I watched a little bit of the first one Poison movie, but I wanted to make it my own. I simply controlled the temperature and then created things: a building block.
As for what the actor thinks is the most important aspect of Venom, he said: “The joy! Venom, even though he may do things to people that he doesn’t like, is full of joy. He is happy. He’s like an overgrown child in kindergarten who drinks too much orange juice and crackers at lunchtime. Then the teacher can’t put them down because he is faster”.
Todd went on to describe the character as “thunderous” and “Shakespearean,” saying, “He’s got good roots. There is nothing fickle about him. He’s one of the most down-to-earth, down-to-earth characters he’s ever had the opportunity to express. He’s also very Shakespearean.”
You can definitely tell that Todd is having a blast playing this character! He hopes fans can feel the love he put into his performance: “I just want the fans to know that I’m a player first. I didn’t just take it as a job. I took it as an act of love. I hope that comes through with my performance and inclusion with the entire ensemble.”
Todd also explained that everything he’s done in his career has led him to this moment, saying, “All the vocal patterns that I’ve learned and accumulated over the years all fit into the present moment. And I can honestly say that Venom is one of the most cherished roles I’ve ever had the opportunity to layer and express. This is the role of a lifetime. If I had only one other role in life, it would be this. But hopefully there are many more.
