Director Matthew Vaughn he recently appeared on the podcast Happy Sad Confused and during the show, one of the things he talked about was the state of Star Wars franchising. He says that Star Wars has “gone wrong” and then shares what he would do if asked to work on the franchise, and that includes rebooting Luke Skywalker, which he knows would make fans “go crazy.”
When asked about the franchises taking over Hollywood right now, the director explains that the major Hollywood studios are focused on making money:
“Studios are like any art form. The music business, cinema, fashion… financing and commerce have taken over creativity. This always means that in the end you will get short term gains, but in the long term you kill everything. This is what’s happening now… movies, music, art. Trading has taken over and now the pendulum is starting to swing back. Creativity should always be the driving force behind any decision and then you think about how to profit from it later. If you try to make money early, you’ll kill some great franchises.
He makes a great point there and then continues to talk about it Star Wars. When asked if it would be difficult for him to turn down an offer to direct a Star Wars film, Vaughn explained what would excite him about making it:
“Now, not so much. For me, making a Star Wars movie is about playing with the characters I love. If they had told me they were going to reboot ‘Star Wars’ and actually have Luke Skywalker, Solo and Vader and make your version of it. Everyone would say he’s an idiot for trying, but that would excite me.
Vaughn went on to talk about characters like James Bond and various superheroes who are often rebooted with different actors. He explained:
“Because they are the [‘Star Wars’] characters so time-honored that you can’t remake it for a new audience since 1977? Star Wars is the Skywalker family and that’s where I think they went wrong. They forgot. They worked brilliantly on TV, but there needs to be a new epic. This is what I would do [i.e. reboot Luke]. Everyone’s going to go crazy, but let’s move on. If you want a new generation, make the film for them. I hope the older generation does it well enough for them to enjoy it.
Yes, I think it’s safe to say that fans would go crazy for the reboot Star Wars. Many fans would hate it, but it would never happen. I just don’t think Lucasfilm will ever attempt to reboot Luke Skywalker or any of the original Star Wars films. It is truly sacred ground. Vaughn is obviously willing to mix things up, though, and he doesn’t worry about angering the fans.
