EXCLUSIVE: X men And The last king of Scotland Star James McAvoy will make his film debut in a film about the true story of two Scottish boys from Dundee who conned the international music industry by adopting American accents and posing as established California rap duo Silibil N’ Brains.
In the late 1990s, their musical ambitions were repeatedly mocked for their “fake” accents, so they went bankrupt and reinvented themselves as California rappers. The currently untitled film shows the duo re-recording their own songs with fake accents and arriving in London claiming to be an established duo in the Cali scene and childhood friends with Eminem. They quickly secured a record deal, a big advance, and a gig on MTV…until it all fell apart.
BAFTA winner McAvoy told us: “What these two young men from Dundee have attempted is beyond all expectations and I can’t wait to bring this absolutely incredible and very Scottish-Californian story to the cinema.” It is my passion to bring Scottish talent behind. in front of the camera, and I am delighted to make my directorial debut in my home country. “The film will primarily be a celebration of the Scottish spirit, but the duo’s daring reinterpretation of ‘Silibil N’ Brains’ cannot help but appeal to a global audience.”
The film is produced by Homefront Productions under the direction of veteran Scottish producer Guy J Louthan (The wilderness) and filming will begin next year, with most of the production taking place in Scotland. Kahleen Crawford will direct the cast, which will begin production later this year.
The story formed the basis of Bain’s 2010 memoir California plan (later reprinted as Direct from Scotland) and was adapted into the 2013 SXSW documentary The Great Hip-Hop Hoax.
Divide Star McAvoy is currently working on the Blumhouse horror film Don’t say anything bad and will be featured in Legendary’s next The Book of Clarence.
McAvoy is repped by United Agents, UTA, The Lede Company and Sloane Offer.
