THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS Director Henry Selick Talks Sequel and Shares Idea for Possible Prequel

The nightmare before Christmas is a classic film that fans have enjoyed watching during the holiday season for years. I’ve watched this movie every year around the holidays since it came out, and it’s a perfect stand-alone story, but that doesn’t mean the director of the movie, Henry Selickhe doesn’t have the idea of continuing the story in a sequel, because he does.

THE Tim BurtonThe film follows Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, who stumbles upon a portal to Christmas Town. Enchanted by the joy and magic of Christmas, Jack decides to take the holidays into his own hands and offer his own twisted version of Christmas joy. However, his well-intentioned plans inadvertently create chaos, as his interpretation of Halloween-themed Christmas is not well received by the human world. With the help of Sally, a rag doll who harbors feelings for him, Jack must correct his mistakes and restore the natural order of the holidays.

30 years have passed since then The nightmare before Christmas was released and although there are no plans for a sequel, Selick addressed questions about a sequel, saying:

“I think Tim [Burton] in particular it seems, why joke? It certainly doesn’t need to make more money from a sequel. It’s had so many other hits and so far no one has had a great idea for a sequel. And I still think Tim decides. I don’t think there is any idea that can convince him.”

The director then shared his idea for a prequel film, saying:

“There could be a more interesting story about how Jack became the king of Halloween Town.”

Over the years Selick and Burton have rejected CG animation proposals for a sequel, as they should have. Selick previously shared that “a sequel has come out several times,” but “initially they always said, ‘But it’s going to have to be CG.’ And this was a failure for me. It certainly was for Tim Burton.”

A sequel novel was actually written that focuses on the character of Sally. The story is told from Sally’s point of view and “sees the happily married Sally and Jack whose lives are momentarily turned upside down when Sally accidentally releases a mysterious villain into Halloween Town. With Jack and the entire holiday world in danger, Sally embarks on a mission to other holiday worlds, including a previously unexplored one, as the Pumpkin Queen, uncovering secrets about how to save the world and wrestling with new discoveries about her life passed. “

The question is: does the franchise need a new movie? No, not really. But, if a sequel or prequel were made, you know everyone would flock to theaters to watch it.
