THEY LIVE Producer Sandy King says there “may be” a sequel in the works

Giovanni Carpenter1988 sci-fi action thriller They live It was a really fun movie! The story cleverly intertwines socio-political commentary with the story of an alien invasion. Its themes are more relevant today than ever in our current media and political climate.

It seems the classic film, which is an adaptation of Ray Nelson’s short story “Eight O’Clock in the Morning,” is ripe for a new retelling. During a recent interview with CB, one of the original film’s producers, Sandy King, hinted that some sort of sequel could be in the works.

King joked: “It’s kind of like watching CNN now, isn’t it? I think if you stay tuned, you might actually see something before too long.” As for whether this means the arrival of a new chapter in the story, King said, “There could be.”

King and Carpenter are currently working together on John Carpenter’s horror series Suburban Screams, arriving on Peacock on October 13. So, they spent a lot of time together discussing things and maybe starting to work on other projects like a sequel to They Live.

When previously there was talk of a revival of They liveCarpenter said, “Well, I’m not going to tell you, because it might be closer to reality than you think. There was a feature film. It was a feature film called Resistencewritten by, oh, the guy who made the [Planet of the] Movies about monkeys. Matt Reeves. But then he moved on, and so the sequel is, well, we’ll see. We’ll just have to see.”

They live follows a wanderer named Nada, played by Roddy Piper, who comes across a pair of special sunglasses. When you wear them, the world transforms before your eyes. Billboards, magazines and television broadcasts reveal hidden and subliminal messages that enforce obedience, conformity and consumerism. Instead of the humans she once recognized, many individuals are revealed as horrific alien beings who control society from behind this facade.

As Nada delves deeper, she discovers that these extraterrestrials have infiltrated human society at its highest levels, manipulating the masses through media and economic domination. He teams up with his friend Frank, played by Keith David, the two take on the responsibility of confronting and unmasking the alien agenda. Throughout its narrative, “They Live” provides a trenchant critique of 1980s consumer culture, media manipulation and power structures, presenting a world where the real monsters are hiding in plain sight, controlling the population through subliminal messages and deception.
