ONE PIECE co-showrunner talks about getting Jamie Lee Curtis involved

Jamie Lee Curtis wants to participate in the live-action A piece series and wants to take on the live-action role of Dr. Kureha. Shortly afterwards she said that she would launch a campaign to be cast in the series, A piecethe co-showrunner, Matt Owenshe responded by saying, “Mommy dearest, that’s why we sent you that amount! There’s no need to lobby. Once we get what we deserve and get back to work, let’s talk about it!”

Now, in a recent interview with Deadline, Owens was asked about adding Curtis to the cast, and said that they’re “trying to manifest it” and that once the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike is over, they’ll start having “real conversations” with the actress. He also said that the show’s staff is currently “writing for her.” Owen said:

“We have the opportunity to choose some roles, some rules that are very important, and it turns out that Jamie Lee Curtis is a fan of One Piece. As soon as he said that, we thought, okay, we have to try to get her on the show. What can we do? And Doctor Kureha, fortunately, is a character that will appear in our story, and he’s perfect for Jamie Lee Curtis. So we tried to start manifesting this dream of ours. After she won the Oscar, the writers’ room sent her a Doctor Kureha figure with a nice note that said, “Congratulations on your statue, here’s another one to put next to it.” I hope to talk to you soon.’

“When he reposted it, it got a lot of interest from fans and I commented on it. We are trying to manifest it. Yes, SAG is still on strike at the moment, so there haven’t been any real conversations. But as soon as it can happen, I’m ready. I’ll take her out to dinner, we’ll talk about it. We’re going to do everything because at this point we’re writing for her – we really, really want her to come and play with us in season two.”

It sounds like the production team will make every effort to make this casting happen, and if so, there’s no doubt that Curtis will be great in the role. My only problem with the casting of Curtis is that she is such a famous actress that she might be more of a distraction and take the audience away from the story. One of the things I love about the show is that all the main characters are played by people who aren’t well known, so the world feels more real and immersive.

But there are also plenty of fans excited about the prospect of Curtis playing Dr. Kureha. Regardless of how it turns out, I have faith in the creative team. They did a great job with the first season! What do you think!?
