Netflix shares a nostalgic farewell video for its DVD shipping service and revealed the last DVD shipped

Today Netflix will send out its final DVDs in the mail. For the last 25 years they have been mailing DVDs to subscribers in their signature red envelopes and that era has come to an end. To say goodbye to the service, Netflix released a nostalgic and charming video that looks back to the era of the DVD shipping service. The video came with the following note:

We have always loved entertainment, and that little red envelope remains an enduring symbol of our mission to make it better for every member. DVDs will forever remain in our DNA.

Netflix began mailing DVDs in 1998, and according to the company, the first DVD to be mailed was Tim Burton’S Cockroach juice. The service quickly became a huge hit among people and shipped over 5 billion DVDs during its time in operation.

Deadline also revealed the title of the last Netflix DVD ever released, and that was it Joel AND Ethan Cohen’S True courage remake, 2010.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos posted this morning on Instagram, writing, “Today, after 25 years, we ship our final DVD.” The executive continued: “Those iconic red envelopes were so beloved that we mailed more than 5 billion of them to cities and towns, large and small, that otherwise wouldn’t have had access to the variety of films and television programs we made available.”

While Netflix has a nostalgic feel, I still really miss the days of browsing movies at local video stores. Netflix was the reason many of these video stores failed.

If you have a final DVD or Blu-ray from Netflix, you don’t need to send it back. They’re letting you keep it.
