Showtime has released the first director’s trailer William Friedkinit’s the final film The Caine Mutiny court-martial. Sounds like a great movie! I like a good military courtroom drama and this one will tell an interesting story. On top of that, the film has an impressive cast and they will deliver some fantastic performances!
The film will be based on the 1953 play by Herman Wouk, itself an adaptation of his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Caine Mutiny. The story follows a naval officer who is put on trial for mutiny after taking command from the captain of a ship who he believes is acting erratically, endangering both the ship and its crew.
Although the original story was set during World War II, Friedkin updated the story “so that it’s no longer Pearl Harbor. I made it contemporary, involving the Gulf of Hormuz and the Strait of Hormuz, which lead to Iran.”
The film has a great cast including Jason Clarke as the navel-gazing lawyer, Barney Greenwald, who is tasked with defending Lieutenant Steve Maryk, the first officer accused of mutiny. Jake Lacy takes on Maryk’s role and they are joined by Kiefer Sutherland as Lieutenant Philip Francis Queeg, the ship’s beleaguered captain, alongside Monica Raimund, Lewis Pullman, Jay Duplass, Tom Rileyand the delay Lance Reddick.
In the film, “As the naval court-martial begins, Barney Greenwald (Clarke), a skeptical naval lawyer, reluctantly agrees to defend Lieutenant Steve Maryk (Lacy), a Navy first officer who took control of the USS CAINE from his domineering captain, Lieutenant Philip Francis Queeg (Sutherland), during a violent sea storm in hostile waters. As the trial progresses, Greenwald becomes increasingly concerned and wonders whether the events aboard the Caine were a real mutiny or simply the courageous acts of a group of sailors who did not trust their unstable leader.
The film will debut on Paramount+ with Showtime on Friday, October 6, then premiere on Sunday, October 8 at 9/8c, on Showtime.
