Warner Bros. wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to play the Riddler in Christopher Nolan’s DARK KNIGHT RISES

The Dark Knight Trilogy screenwriter David S. Goyer recently shared a lot of insider details about many of the projects he’s worked on over the years. One of the things she confirmed in her interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast was that Warner Bros. wanted it Leonardo Dicaprio play the Riddler in the third film of the trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. Goyer said:

“We had all these proposals. I remember The Dark Knight [premiere], the head of Warner Bros. said, “You have to be the Riddler.” You have to say to Chris, Leo as the Riddler: “This is not how we work, so as not to take anything away from him.”

When Goyer says, “That’s not how we work,” he was referring to Hollywood’s tendency to cast a villain and then build a movie around him. Goyer added:

“I had the feeling – with the Spider-Man movies or when superhero movies started getting made and there were sequels – that the studios were always like, ‘OK, who’s going to be our villain in the next movie? And let’s make a movie around That.’ Chris was adamantly against it… let’s figure out what story we want to tell [first]and what we want to explore thematically with Bruce. Then we find a villain that fits the story.”

Ultimately, Nolan chose to focus on Bane (Tom Hardy) and Catwoman (Anne Hathaway), and also introduced a new character played by Joseph Gordon-LevittJohn Blake, who would take on the role of Batman in that universe.

Although DiCaprio is a great actor, I don’t see him playing the Riddler at all. It wouldn’t have been the best direction for the franchise. What do you think!?
