Guillermo del Toro would be attached to direct a STAR WARS film from a script written by David S. Goyer

During a recent interview, screenwriter David S. Goyer (Lama, Foundation) revealed that he was writing a screenplay for a Star Wars movies in 2019 and Guillermo del Toro he was in charge of directing the film! Del Toro also responded, confirming his involvement in the project.

During the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Goyer shared, “I wrote an unproduced Star Wars movie that Guillermo del Toro was going to direct.” Goyer explained that “it was about four years ago.”

The writer then revealed that he also worked on a Jedi origin film, saying, “I also wrote a ‘script’ for a Jedi origin story… set 25,000 years before the first Star Wars film.”

That project seems to be in line with the director James Mangold is currently in development for Lucasfilm. His film is also set 25,000 years before the events of Episode I and will focus on the birth of the Force.

As for the Star Wars project that del Toro was trying to direct, offered a cryptic preview on social media of what might have been. He said, “True. I can’t say much. Maybe two letters ‘J’ and ‘BB’ are three letters?”

BB may be referring to the droid BB-8, introduced in The Force awakens. As for the J, I remember del Toro had an idea for a Jabba the Hutt Star Wars gangster movie, so that’s what the J could represent. At the time he explained: “I would do the kind of Godfather saga that Jabba the Hutt had to go through to gain control. First, because he is the character who is most similar to me and I like him. I love the idea of ​​a Hutt-type mafia, a very complex coup. I love the character.”

It would have been interesting to see del Toro take on a Star Wars film project! When he explained why the film wasn’t made, Goyer said, “There was a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff going on at Lucasfilm at the time. It was an interesting script.”
