Details on the proposed LA CONFIDENTIAL sequel and how a Netflix exec fell asleep

LA confidential Oscar-winning writer Brian Helgeland ended up developing a proposal for a sequel to the original film, based on the author James Ellroyit’s the novel. He went out and pitched his sequel to several studios including Warner Bros. and Netflix, but no one was interested. In fact, a Netflix executive fell asleep during the presentation, which is not a good sign.

Helgeland recently spoke about his experience and shared details with Deadline’s Toronto studio, saying:

“James Ellroy and I came up with an elaborate proposal for LA Confidential 2 which takes place during the Patty Hearst era, when the Symbionese Liberation Army came to Los Angeles, and we had Guy Pearce attachment e Russell Crowe) AND Chadwick Bosemann as a young cop who works for Mayor Bradley.”

This looks like a great cinematic package, and as a fan of the original film, it’s something I would have been very interested in seeing. But… “We proposed it to everyone. We had to go to Warner Bros first and Warner Bros is like we don’t make movies like this.

Obviously not! Helgeland went on to talk about the camp, saying, “Ellroy is a performance artist and he would do the camp; and it was an amazing presentation.” At the same time, he put a Netflix executive to sleep. He shares: “Our Netflix executive fell asleep during the presentation. They fell asleep and dozed off during the pitch. I went home and said “We can’t do this anymore.”

So, I guess they gave up their attempts to get LA confidential 2 off the ground. It’s a shame because I think a lot of people would have been interested in seeing another story with these characters.
