Kevin ConroyBatman’s lasting mark on the Batman character is an achievement that very few voice actors can boast. Since his debut as the Dark Knight in Batman: The Animated Series by the early 1990s, Conroy became synonymous with the voice of hero for an entire generation. He brought an animated character to life in a way that not many voice actors can do. He captured the essence of the hero’s dual identity, bridging the gap between billionaire playboy and vigilante crime fighter.
Over the years, Conroy’s voice has graced various Batman spin-offs, video games, and animated films. Batman: Mask of the Phantom. She has consistently demonstrated that she understands the core of the character like no one else. She defined Batman for fans, shaping their perception of the character’s depth, complexity, and internal struggle.
Today I have a new behind the scenes video for you to watch titled “Kevin Conroy: I am the night,” and focuses on Conroy and honors the voice actor for what he brought to Batman. Paolo Dini says in the featurette:
“He really embraced aspects of the Batman character in a way that no other actor we had listened to had done, and I think that comes from the fact that he wasn’t entirely familiar with Batman as a superhero or pop culture character. He came into the character from a very Shakespearean point of view, of someone who has made sacrifices, who he has lost greatly.”
Voice casting director for the show Andrea Romano added:
“He had this wonderful interpretation of Batman’s voice… when I asked him, [he explained] “this is a Hamlet story”: this is a man whose parents were killed seeking revenge. While he brought this kind of elegant performance to Batman and Bruce Wayne [that] put it a step above.
Conroy himself said in a past interview:
“To be honest I went in like a stupid actor. I really did a cold read… I had no experience with animation. This very dark voice came to me and I went to this other place that no one else had gone to, I guess.
