After a lot of behind the scenes drama in between Kevin Costner, Taylor Sheridanand Paramount, it was announced Yellowstone would end with the fifth season. However, the story will continue with a new series that will be led by Matthew McConaughey.
According to Costner, if things had gone a little smoother, the Yellowstone the series would continue with a sixth and seventh season. In fact, Costner was in talks for these two additional seasons, and then it all fell apart.
According to Deadline, Costner revealed these details during testimony in his pending divorce case last week, when asked by his ex-wife. Cristina Baumgartnerif he had been offered the sixth season of Yellowstone.
Costner replied and explained that there were negotiations for additional seasons Yellowstone and that he had been offered $24 million to make seasons 5, 6 and 7. But he went on to explain that there were “creative issues” and that his talks with Sheridan and the series producers were trying to “break the impasse .” He then clarified that it was the producer, not him, who walked away from the table. Costner also indicated that he’s “probably going to court” over his departure from the series.
It was previously reported that Costner was more interested in focusing on his two-part western epic Horizonwhich had a big impact on his willingness to shoot Yellowstone. But it seems he still wanted to be a part of it Yellowstone. I guess the producers didn’t want to get around his schedule.
Costner delved into the programming problems of Yellowstone this had been cited as a problem in terms of disagreements with the producers, saying: ‘Somewhere along the line, they wanted to change things. They wanted to do 5A and 5B; [it] wanted Horizon. I was about to make my film Horizon and I quit that show, I do my movie, then I do B. A show I only did once a year, now I did twice.”
While Costner’s exit alters the general plans Yellowstone and specifically his character, Sheridan had previously said that it doesn’t actually change John Dutton’s ending, he just truncates it. Speaking of Costner’s departure, she said, “I’m disappointed. It cuts closure on his character. He doesn’t alter it, but it cuts it. I don’t like car crashes. Both [Dutton’s] fate swells [Costner’s] Ego or name-calling is collateral damage that I don’t factor into the storytelling.”
Sheridan went on to say of Costner, “My opinion of Kevin as an actor hasn’t changed. His creation of John Dutton is symbolic and powerful…and I’ve never had any issues with Kevin that he and I couldn’t solve.” on the telephone. But once lawyers get involved, people can’t talk to each other and start saying things that aren’t true and try to shift blame based on how the press or the public seem to react. “I have a lot of this stuff on my chin and I don’t know if anyone deserves it. His film seems to be a big priority for him and he wants to shift the focus. [the movie is] it’s worth it – and it’s good.”
It’s a shame that Sheridan and the producers couldn’t work things out with Costner. I sure would have liked to see Yellowstone continue with him for another couple of seasons.
