JUST MURDERS IN BUILDING Production Designer Points Out Hidden Easter Eggs In Meryl Streep’s Apartment

Only homicides in the building is moving forward into its third season and third murder mystery to solve, and it’s as entertaining as the previous seasons, but this one is a pleasure to see Meryl Streep plays the role of Loretta Durkin, a newly discovered Broadway star with whom he is falling in love Martin shortis Oliver Putnam. He’s a quirky, fun, layered character, and we got to see his New York apartment in this week’s episode, S3 Ep.5, “Ah, Love!”. There were so many things to see in his apartment, and the show’s set designer, Rich Murraysays there were many hidden Easter eggs in the award-winning actress’ career.

There is a framed hanging tea towel that is a nod to the 2015 film Suffragette in which Streep played British political activist Emmeline Pankhurst. Murray says: “He’s hanging between the window. His character name is on the tea towel. Suffragette is a magazine that came out in the early 1900s and it was an activist pamphlet, so we put her name in it.

The tribute to Kramer versus Kramer it’s on Loretta’s refrigerator door. Says Murray, “It faithfully reproduces the bulletin board above his son Billy Kramer’s bed in the film. And there’s a character Christmas card from him to Billy. Then, we recreated that card and hung the pictures around it.

The tulips on Loretta’s desk were taken from the 2009 film Julia and Julia played by Streep e Stanley Tucci.

Murray was drawn to the flower arrangement when the couple went out to dinner in Paris. “I’m in a booth and there’s a gorgeous arrangement of French tulips that look like they’ve been moved a few times. It was this gigantic deal. So, I always put an arrangement of French tulips on his desk, and they were arranged in a weird way, like in the movie.” He adds, “The scripts on his desk were plays or movies that he had acted in.”

In a nod to Streep’s character Karen Blixen in the 1985 film Out of Africa, Murray upholstered an ottoman in a burlap fabric with a Kenyan coffee design. Says Murray, “Her character lived on a coffee plantation, so we put her next to the couch.”

Of course, Murray had to pay homage to Streep’s iconic character The devil wears Prada. He explained: “We built a series of books in his library and on the spine of the book is the logo of the film.”

These are the Easter eggs he talked about, but there could be more! I want to rewatch the episode just to see what I can come up with! I love this show and I really hope Streep doesn’t turn out to be the killer so maybe we will see her again. Only time will tell…
