Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back featured one of the biggest and most surprising twists in cinematic history with the reveal that Darth Vader was the father of Luke Skywalker. My dad told me that while he and my mom were waiting in line to see the movie when it came out, some kids drove by yelling “Darth Vader is Luke’s father!” Let’s spoil the movie for everyone in line! Crazy, but that’s how they did it back when the internet and social media didn’t exist.
It turns out, however, that the Darth Vader actor David Prowse it ruined the huge twist two years earlier The empire strikes again it even came out! George Lucas did everything possible to keep the “I am your father” surprise a secret before and during the film’s launch.
Two years before the film’s premiere, during a 1978 interview with the San Francisco Examiner, Prowse revealed the potential twist in the sequel by saying:
“Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker are engaged in a lightsaber duel when Luke discovers that Darth is, in fact, his long-lost father.”
I’ve included a portion of the article below for you to see. Now, it seems Prowse was just speculating at the time, but the speculation was all about the money! Also, I guess some people may have thought he was just joking. He claimed his revelation was purely coincidental, but you never know.
If the internet had existed then, that quote would have spread like wildfire, but it was pretty much contained in this newspaper and hasn’t gone anywhere. I’m sure some fans who read the paper went crazy and told their friends about it. But it didn’t go any further and didn’t spoil anything. It was quite contained.
There was also a second leak from Prowse Return of the Jedi! A year before the film was released, a British tabloid leaked that Darth Vader would die in the film. Prowse was held responsible for the leak, which only hurt his relationship with George Lucas.
Prowse admitted sharing the news with a reporter who initially told him about his weightlifting career. That conversation turned to Star Wars, and it was at this point that Prowse accidentally revealed Vader’s fate. When it came time to unmask Vader, Lucas replaced Prowse with the actor Sebastian Shaw.
Prowse later shared that everyone on the film set cordoned him off following the leak. Lucas refused to speak to him during the final six weeks of production.
There’s no doubt that Lucas was stressing himself to death about these leaks and hoped they didn’t gain traction, which they didn’t.
