I did it! I know it’s been a long time, but I’m finally done Super Samurai from the Power Rangers. This has been a difficult season for me to finish in all honesty. The season is a continuation of Samurai from the Power Rangers and was also adapted from Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. Let me know in the comments below what you think Super Samurai.
This will be relatively short since it won’t change much since Samurai. We have the same cast of characters, same villain, same goals, etc. Because of this, I think the rest of the Neo-Saban Era seasons will be completed with both seasons sharing an article. Let’s dive into my thoughts for Super Samurai Although?
Like I said, not much has changed. Many of my previous complaints still apply. I want to talk about some things that I liked Super Samurai. First, I like the Super Samurai modes that the Rangers get. The white coat looks really good on each of them. I also appreciate that while the whole team can’t use it at the same time, each Ranger can use it a couple of times. It’s nice to have something that isn’t strictly a Red Ranger power-up. Another thing I liked was the addition of Lauren Shiba (played by Kimberley Crossmann). It brought in some more drama that worked well (for the most part) to shake things up in the last few episodes and it kind of makes sense.
I also enjoyed the two holiday specials this time. Halloween wasn’t just a bad guy clip show! There were some funny moments, like the transformation of the Rangers, but dressed as animals. Meanwhile, the Christmas episode was a clip-show, but it wasn’t bad. I actually like the premise of Bulk and Spike going to the dojo to get Mia a present. They are then welcomed inside by the Mentor and try to help him decorate for the holidays as the Rangers are stuck in the Megazord. My only complaint is that we don’t know what Spike gave Mia. He annoys me because it seemed like a big deal was made of it.
The last point that I liked was how it all ended. We’ll find out where the Rangers are going now that the Nighlocks have been defeated and overall it makes sense. Emily is back to take care of her sister, Mike is going with her because he likes her, Mia wants to go to culinary school, Kevin is going to train for the Olympics, Antonio is going to go fishing around the world and Jayden really doesn’t know what to do. I think the latter is the key. Jayden was raised with one purpose: to defeat the Nighlocks. It’s done now, so he’s left a little unsure what he’s in for.
Unfortunately there were still problems with Super Samurai. For starters, although I like it Jason Narvy reprized his role as Skull, that ending still felt forced. It felt like the team tried to better connect Bulk and Spike to everything, but ultimately there was still such a huge disconnect that I couldn’t find much enjoyment in the brief scene with Bulk and Skull reuniting.
Also, while I like the addition of Lauren in a lot of ways, I’m extremely frustrated with the whole “Jayden Has A Dark Secret” storyline. We find out his secret about him is that he has an older sister who has gone into hiding, perfecting the sealing powers of the Shiba clan. Until then, we’re on this journey knowing that Jayden has some dark secret, and it’s just that she lied about the Sealing Power because that’s what his sister is doing. It felt more like something Jayden was losing his powers to him, or was part Nighlock, or had an inner demon about the way they were building him. I can understand and appreciate the subversion of expectations, but for me it didn’t happen this time. It’s especially frustrating because Jayden acts like the Rangers would hate him if they knew and then eventually they all rally around him and act like an ass towards Lauren. He tried, but in the end he failed me.
At the end of the day, Super Samurai it was just more Samurai. She did some cool stuff, but I don’t know if she did enough to raise the score. I know that in the list technically it is below Operation Overdrive, but for me they are probably at the bottom of the list. It can only go up from here, right? Next is Power Rangers Megaforce.
