We are about to see a third film starring Kenneth Branaghthe famous detective, detective Hercule Poirot. Based on the classic murder mystery novels by Agatha Christie, Michael Green he adapted each of the scripts for Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Death on the Nile (2022) and next month An obsession in Venice, and Branagh directed each film in dual roles while starring. Each movie is a star-studded good time with a twisty story, great costumes, and an ongoing mystery.
But while the first two films were more straightforward mysteries set on a train and a boat, respectively, the next film is a supernatural thriller and the film’s executive producer, James Prichardexplained to Total Film magazine why they went in this new direction, saying:
“If we’re going to keep making these movies, we can’t do the same thing over and over again. A departure right now is perhaps risky, but it also has the potential to keep it alive, bring in a different audience, and make something interesting that, yes hope, it will surprise and delight.”
In the upcoming film, Branagh is joined by Michelle Yeoh (Everything everywhere all at once), Kyle Allen (Rosaline), Camillo Cottin (Call my agent), Jamie Dornan (Belfast), Tina Fei (30 Rock), Jude Hill (Belfast), Al-Khan (6 Underground), Emma Lair (Mayor of Kingston), Kelly Reilly (Yellow stone), AND Richard Scamarico (The shadow of Caravaggio).
The film is set in post-war Venice on the eve of All Saints Day. A Haunting in Venice is “a terrifying mystery with the return of the celebrated detective, Hercule Poirot. Now retired and living in self-imposed exile in the most glamorous city in the world, Poirot reluctantly attends a séance in a rundown and haunted mansion. When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets.
Regarding the possibility of seeing another Hercule Poirot film in the future, Prichard said:
“If Ken wants to do more and Michael wants to write more, we’ll definitely do another one. There’s still a lot of material to do, so we won’t run out of inspiration.”
I’d be down for a few more of these movies! They are very entertaining, and the next one seems to be a scary and wild ride! An obsession in Venice hits theaters September 15.
