Director Jan de Bont was the person behind the camera when the classic disaster thriller Tornado hit theaters. The film, about storm chasers who developed a way to track tornadoes and give residents in the storm’s path a much quicker warning and chance of survival, was a visual spectacle that blew audiences away and still holds up today .
27 years after its release, and before the sequel was in development, Twisterswhich has no involvement from the director or the original cast, de Bont spoke with Inverse about why much of the film won’t be able to be re-run in Hollywood today.
“When things fell out of the sky, there were real things falling out of a helicopter. If you film a car fleeing a tornado in a hail storm, it was real ice hitting us. It’s a film that it can’t be done again… That will never happen again.”
He went on to say that while there were many difficult practical effects, Industrial Light & Magic took them to new heights with their tornado VFX. As it turns out, getting the huge funding for Twister hinged on making the storms look real, which ILM was able to do.
“Every take was a fluke. It would have taken us three days to get all that information onto film. Right now it’s fast, but it was very slow at first. movie .”
When asked about the sequel, de Bont said:
“He made so much money for the studio. Sooner or later they would.”
He went on to say that he can’t wait to see what Chung does with the sequel and he took note of that director Lee Isaac Chung has the opportunity to bring a totally different perspective to the concept, just like Greta Gervig made for Barbie.
“It could be a totally different approach. It’s the same with [Greta Gerwig] of Barbie. No one ever thought that he would direct that film and that it would be so successful.”
This could be the breath of fresh air the franchise needs to keep going. I sure hope it’s good!
Twisters is currently set to hit theaters on July 19, 2024.
