THE BEAR The co-showrunner considered putting Carmy and Sydney together

The bear it’s one of the best shows on TV right now. With its second season just wrapping up, fans are excited about where the series is headed, and with awards season fast approaching, it’s only a matter of time before the show will be lauded with all the recognition it deserves. The flawless cast portrays a very real group of people with trauma and scars and beauty and talent and a drive to create a successful restaurant with really good food.

One storyline that drove fans was the possibility of a romance between the show’s lead characters, Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, played by Jeremy Allen Whiteand his restaurant partner Sydney Adamu, played by Ayo Edebiri. I don’t understand at all. I felt a little tension and a touch of will or not in an episode or two, but their drive to keep this restaurant running and their love for the job is what brings them together. It’s not romantic and a romance would totally destroy them!

The co-showrunner, director and writer of the show, Giovanna Calòshe considered the idea early in the making of the series, but said even she was surprised by viewers’ reaction to wanting them to reunite, telling THR:

It really surprised me. And I will say, at one point, very early on, I thought, “Maybe they hook up.” And Chris said “No!” (Laughs.) And he was absolutely right, but I think what I was getting at was these relationships are complicated. I’ve heard people use the term “working wife” – there are relationships in our lives that all have different meanings, and sometimes we really rush to characterize everything very neatly and there’s something beautiful about recognizing how messy relationships really are. our lives and how entangled so many of our relationships are.

It’s unusual to see two people on a show who have a common goal, are entrenched in a highly stressful situation, and are both young and attractive, and you’re not rooting for them to be together. I know it’s a weird place to be, but I like that it’s a relationship that’s beyond romance. It gets into weird territory, like when Sydney was jealous this season. But she wasn’t jealous because Carmy was in a relationship, she just wanted her time, as she felt uncomfortable with their partnership and her dedication to this next huge step. And he’s so incredibly handsome with his bright blue eyes and “sorry” sign language, it seems like she should be falling for him, but I’m rooting for her to realize that Marcus (Lionel Boyce) is really into her, and he reciprocates it for her.

The bear seasons one and two are available to stream on Hulu. Stay tuned for Season 3 news.
