Comic Adam Devine he recently shared his thoughts on why Hollywood isn’t making more comedy movies these days, and he blames Marvel movies and superheroes. He believes that this type of film has killed the public’s interest in comedies.
Devine recently appeared on Theo Von’s This Past Weekend podcast, and when asked why we don’t see Hollywood greenlighting as many comedies as it once did, the actor said:
“My theory: I think Marvel screwed it up. I feel like superhero movies have ruined comedies because you go to the theater and expect to see something that cost $200 million, and comedy movies are not. So you’re like, ‘Why would I spend the same amount of money to go see a little comedy at the theater if I can spend it and watch something worth $200 million?’”
The actor/comedian went on to say that he believes Marvel movies have pretty much become the new standard for comedy with the way all movies incorporate a fair amount of humor. He said:
“They still make those movies funny, like, ‘Oh my God, is that raccoon talking? This is fun!’ Which it is, but it’s not a real comedy… Each production studio produced several plays a year, and there were about 45 plays in the theater a year. So every week or so there’s a new comedy in theaters. Now, last year, there were like 6 or 7. It’s crazy.
You know, it’s pretty crazy that you don’t see more comedies made for the big screen these days! I haven’t really thought about it, but he’s right! There were so many more comedies coming out! Some of the points he makes may be valid, but I don’t think Marvel is all to blame.
I’d say streaming services are the main reason we don’t see comedy on the big screen. Most of the made comedy movies are going direct streaming these days. Regardless of what’s causing it, it’s sad that we don’t see more comedies in theaters, and I don’t think it will ever go back to the way it was.
What do you think about it?
