It seems DC Studios isn’t expecting a small box office hit with its next film Blue Beetle movie. According to Deadline, the film is posting a $30 million opening weekend at the box office and that’s definitely a low and underwhelming start for a new superhero film.
This would do Blue Beetle The lowest performing DC title at the box office during an opening weekend this year. Shazam! Fury of the Godswhich was released earlier in the year, grossed just $30.5 million during its opening weekend, while The flash it grossed $55 million. Remember though, The suicide squad it had a worse opening weekend with just $26 million.
I don’t think this comes as a surprise to anyone, but it would be a pleasant surprise if the film actually had a better opening weekend! Only time will tell, though. This could go either way. It’s hard to say, but Blue Beetle isn’t all that popular as a superhero, so we’ll see. Regardless, I think the movie will provide fun entertainment for families.
The director of the film, Angelo Manuel Sotohe really hopes this first film will be a success because he already has a whole trilogy planned!
In the film, “Recent college graduate Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find home isn’t quite as he left it. As he tries to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Beetle. When the Beetle suddenly chooses Jaime as its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with incredible armor with extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero BLUE BEETLE.
Blue Beetle was directed by Angelo Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) from a screenplay adapted from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala). The film is the protagonist Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) as Reyes; Bruna Marchezine as Penny, the female lead and love interest; Belissa Escobedo as Jamie’s younger sister Milagros; as well as Harvey Guillen; AND Susan Sarandon as the villain, Victoria Kord.
The film will only be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.
Blue Beetle is the alter ego of Jaime Reyes, played by Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña. When Jaime returns to his hometown after graduating from college, he is chosen to be the symbiote host of the Scarab, an alien being that grants him superpowers and exoskeletal armor, transforming him into the Blue Beetle.
DC Studios CEO James Gunn recently confirmed that Blue Beetle will be the first official character in his new DCU, but it’s not the first film. That title belongs to Superman: Legacy, which is due out in 2025. However, the first DCU project is Creature Commandos, a Max TV show coming in 2024. Still with us…?
