A moment in THE BEAR’s heartbreaking season 2 finale was not in the original script

The series The bear it’s one of the best shows on TV right now. It just wrapped its second season and fans are talking about the two episodes this season that felt like a punch in the gut! First was the flashback episode, “Fishes,” which boasted an incredible cast of guests, and the final episode, “The Bear,” which finally saw the characters open up the restaurant to their friends and family.

There were triumphs and heartbreak all along the way, as there always is in this series, and one particularly heartbreaking scene in the show’s final moments almost wasn’t in the episode at all. But if you haven’t finished season 2, keep in mind that there are spoilers to come.

In a recent interview with THR, Molly Gordonwho plays chef Carmy’s love interest to Jeremy Allen White in season 2, spoke about the scene where she goes to Carmy’s after hearing he’s locked in the hall.

“When I first read episode 10 [the finale], the voicemail would never be there. When I got into the season, Chris and Jeremy and I were talking things over. Jeremy and I had a connection – he’s such a wonderful person and so forthcoming as an actor and a wonderful scene partner – and what I think happened is that Chris wanted to make that part more meaningful and add more to the episode. It was heartbreaking for me to play the walk-in scene, knowing Jeremy hadn’t heard that voicemail, knowing he would hear it while he was trapped in a refrigerator.

When asked if she filmed the scene alone, against a closed door, she shared:

“Jeremy stuck around for that. He was filming his own version of things inside the fridge a couple days later, but he came the other way to say those lines with me. I’m a woman who’s been through a couple of breakups, so she seemed both cathartic and sad to me. To hear someone say they don’t deserve happiness, or that they deserve to give happiness, is a horrible statement.

The show truly knows how to break your heart in every way. Characters have so many layers and layers of wounds and damage from their past. It will be so nice to see them grow up and take a break in future seasons. I can’t wait to see this series continue so we can see where everyone ends up and hopefully see some peace come to Carmy and the rest of the Bear family.
