When I saw The flash hit theaters a couple of weeks ago, there were so many amazing surprises and hilarious moments that blew the audience away. One of the best of those moments was when we got to see Nicolas Cage as Superman. Not everyone understood why this was a special scene, or even why Cage was there as our favorite Kryptonian. But the person who was perhaps most excited to see this happen was the actor and director Kevin Smith.
This was a pretty deep cut, as it’s based on the movie that never made it to the screen, Superman liveswhich was in development in 1998. Smith wrote the story script, e Tim Burton was hired as director. One of the big sources of contention during the development of Superman lives it was producer Jon Peters’ insistence that Superman fight a giant spider. Smith was forced to add the spider to his script as one of three requests from Peters (the producer also wanted Superman not to fly in the film and wear a black suit), though he’s now finally open to the idea after seeing The flash.
In the film, Nicolas Cage appears in the film during a scene where the multiverse is being torn apart and Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen gets a peek into different worlds. Barry locates a world where Cage is Superman and fights a giant spider in a nod to failure Superman lives.
Smith told Rolling Stone about Cage’s cameo scene:
“It’s shocking. One of the first things I thought when I saw him at the premiere was, “Goddamn, [the giant spider] it would work.’ As much as I teased Jon Peters, it seemed badass.
When asked if he likes the giant spider now, Smith replied:
“You know what? He wasn’t wrong. Like, it could have gone right.
Cage was Smith’s first choice to play Superman Superman lives. Peters preferred Sean Penn.
“He had just seen ‘Dead Man Walking’ and he said, ‘Look [Sean Penn’s] eyes in that film. He has the eyes of a violent animal, a caged killer.’ And I was like, ‘Bro, it’s Superman!’ So he’s like, ‘Who do you see?’ I’ve always loved Nic Cage, so I thought, ‘Nic Cage loves Superman. He talks about knowing comics very well. You guys should be looking for Nic Cage.’ And so when Tim Burton was hired, and suddenly they were going with Nic Cage, I was like, wow, I had an idea and somebody took it seriously. So there’s a sense of strange closure to everything to see that moment in ‘The Flash.’”
Smith is so excited to see Cage appear The flash who is urging Warner Bros. to once again consider making a Superman movie starring Cage.
“If I’m Warner Bros., I’m like, ‘Fuck it. There’s a multiverse, man. Let’s give Nic Cage a Superman movie.’ You don’t have to be the only Superman, but why not? We have several Batmans. I mean, shit, that would be one of the coolest Superman movies ever made. With all due respect to James Gunn and ‘Superman Legacy’, you are talking about one of the greatest American actors alive. I would still support that game 100 percent.
He’s not wrong! I think fans would show up to watch it, and you know Cage would be willing to play the part that’s gone! What do you think?
The flash it is now playing in theaters nationwide.
