One of the most discussed aspects of the new Marvel series Secret invasion it’s not the story it’s telling or the big events that took place in the first episode, it’s the fact that Marvel used AI technology to generate art to create the series’ opening credits. As you can imagine, many fans are pissed.
The titles were developed by Method Studios, which has worked with Marvel on previous shows such as Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel and Loki. Those titles were more traditional and used CGI VFX to develop them. Loki itself features 3D character animations, set extensions, and virtual set designs.
Hence, the AI-generated images used for Secret invasion that was quite a surprise, especially for a company built by artists. The title sequence sees green-colored settings and figures shape-shift between human and Skrull characters.
For those of you wondering why they chose the AI route, producer of Secret Invasion Ali Selim he explained to Polygon: “When we reached out to AI vendors, it was part of it. He’s just out of the Skrull world’s identity shape-shifting, you know? Who did this? Who’s this?”
Selim admitted that he didn’t “really understand” how AI technology works, but was “fascinated by the ways AI could translate the sense of foreboding he wanted for the series.” He said: “We would talk to them about ideas and themes and words, and then the computer would shut down and do something. And then we could change it a little bit by using words, and it would change.
I understand what they were trying to do, but it’s definitely something that could have been done without the AI and probably would have been a lot better if real artists actually worked on it.
Here’s what people are saying on Twitter. Read them and let us know what you think!?
It appears to have been outsourced to Method Studios. I’m really concerned about the impacts of this.

So Marvel really used AI to craft the intro #Secret Invasion… it’s actually over. pic.twitter.com/pWUNOZWTqd

Deeply disappointed that the introduction of Secret Invasion is animated AI art.
The tech bros will see this as a big win, when it’s just another symptom of the now creatively hostile MCU production monster.
Who cares if it “fits the theme because it’s creepy”.
Disgusting.

I will boycott Secret Invasion. A slap in the face to artists and the WGA strike. https://t.co/oM2fEw2YUl

Many people will rave about how good it is #Secret Invasion is but, this show marks the first major invasion of AI on the work of a major studio, it’s absolutely awful to think about and that’s just the beginning.
Think of all the amazing intros created by REAL HUMANS!!! pic.twitter.com/WLRayR9kM5

Secret Invasion being the first Marvel project to use AI to create its content is awful.
This seems like just the beginning of AI surpassing the work of passionate artists. It’s disgusting and the latest twist. pic.twitter.com/kILTFjFjDx

With the Flash using AI for his superman cameos and the Secret Invasion using AI for its opening credits… I think it could get worse in some ways in the future pic.twitter.com/5R23fI2Idb

Another person said: “Marvel really used AI to create the fucking ugliest intro known to man, couldn’t they afford to hire a comic book artist??? LIKE WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS???”
Then there’s this: “This is an embarrassing new low. I can’t believe the wonder is proudly using the same visual gag that kids use in tiktoks for fun.”
