Sony Pictures has developed a new film project of the Spider-Man universe with Bad bunny based on the Marvel superhero character El Muerto. The film was developed by the director Jonas Cuaronbut was recently pulled from the release schedule.

The film was supposed to be released on January 12, 2024, but now that slot will be filled by the Legendary Pictures film Clarence’s bookwhat stars LaKeith Stanfield.

The script for El Morto was written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and the Marvel character is an anti-hero son of a luchador who will inherit the ancestral power of “El Muerto”.

When the project was first announced, Bad Bunny, aka Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasiohe said in a statement: “Bringing El Muerto to life is just amazing…so exciting. It’s the perfect role for me and it’s going to be epic.” She then added:

“It’s crazy. It’s something I still can’t believe. I’m very happy with this character, with this opportunity to be the first Latino [lead]. It’s not about being the first Latino to play a role, it’s about the first Latino main character, that’s the important thing. So it’s something huge and it’s going to be epic. I know people will be proud of my work.

With the removal of the film from the release schedule, the project will be delayed or cancelled. It may just be delayed due to the writer’s strike, but we’ll have to wait and see. I will say, there didn’t seem to be much excitement or hype for the project when it was first announced.

El Muerto was first introduced in 2006’s Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #6, his real name is Juan-Carlos Sanchez, and he is a Mexican luchador who wears a magical mask and is destined to face the mystical god of wrestling El Dorado. “The superpowered wrestler el Muerto’s powers and mask have been passed down from generation to generation. Each wrestler had to prove his worth to his oppressor, el Dorado, so he could stay alive and keep his powers. When Marcus Estrada introduced his son Juan Carlos to el Dorado, Juan Carlos cowered in terror, reluctant to fight him. Marcus Estrada sacrificed his life to try to save Juan Carlos. Out of respect for his father’s courage, el Dorado gave Juan Carlos ten years to travel and become brave, and then to duel a masked wrestler and unmask him.
