Chris Hemsworth he’s been playing Thor for Marvel Studios for a long time, and over the course of his run, the character has kept being reinvented and turned into quite the goofy character. The actor and the filmmakers he worked with really want to keep the audience on their toes and give them something new.
During a recent interview with EW, the actor talked about the possibility of returning to play the character again in another Thor film, and explains that he wants to keep Thor “a little unpredictable”. He explained:
“I don’t want to keep doing that until people are so exhausted that they roll their eyes when they see me appear on screen as that character. If an audience wants to see it, and if there’s something that we believe is exciting and fun, then great. I liked being able to reinvent that character a couple of times. I don’t have the answer yet, but I’d like to try and [figure out] how can we do it again and keep it a little unpredictable.
It was interesting to see the character change over the years, but when Thor: Love and thunder it got, went beyond silly, to the point where it was more annoying than fun to watch. Even Hemsworth thought they had gone too far. She previously explained that even friends of her children criticized the film to the face:
“It’s a bunch of eight-year-olds criticizing my film. We thought this one had too much humour, the action was great but the visual effects weren’t that good.” I shudder and laugh the same way. I think we had too much fun. It has become too silly. It’s always hard to be in the thick of things and have a real perspective… I love the process, it’s always a rush. But you just don’t know how people are going to react.”
As for where Thor’s story should go with a fifth film, Hemsworth previously shared:
“I mean, you look at Thor one and two, they were quite similar. Ragnarok and Love & Thunder: similar. I think it’s just about reinventing it. [Avengers] Infinity War and Endgame to do very drastic things with the character; I like it, I like keeping people alert, it keeps me alert, it keeps me invested. And I’ve said this before: when it gets too familiar, I think there’s a risk of getting lazy, I think, like, ‘Ah, I know what I’m doing,’ you know? So I don’t know — again, I don’t even know if I’ll be invited back. But if you were, I think it would have to be a drastically different take: tone, everything. Just for my sanity [laughs].”
I’m sure we’ll see Hemsworth as Thor again one day, and it’ll be interesting to see what that movie looks like. How will the character be reinvented for his return? One thing we know for sure is that they will retire the silliness next time.
