THE FLASH The director says the film’s strange-looking CGI was done on purpose and explains why

When I first saw The flash, it was months before the film was actually released and we were told that some of the visual effects weren’t finished. So when I was watching the movie and saw some funky looking CGI effects I thought it would be cleaned up before the movie was actually released.

Well, when I saw the fully finished movie, the CGI still looked weird and off. Looks like it’s just bad visual effects! Well, it turns out that this was part of that director’s visual style Andy Muschietti wanted for the film. He’s saying those effects were intentional.

In a recent interview with io9, Muschietti and his producing partner and sister Barbara Muschietti was asked about an early scene on The Flash, in which the hero rescues a group of babies who have fallen out of a hospital window.

When he was relieved at the sequence looked out, Barbara joked, “Nope, we all used real kids.” Then Muschietti defended CGI and explained why CGI looks weird sometimes:

“The idea, of course, is…we’re from the Flash’s perspective. Everything is distorted in terms of lighting and textures. We go into this ‘water world’ which is basically Barry’s point of view. It was part of the design so, if that sounds a little strange to you, it was expected.”

I get what he’s saying and what he was trying to do, but they could have done it in a way where the visual effects didn’t look like bad CGI because that’s how a lot of people see it. While many fans are enjoying the story the film tells as I was walking out of the theater listing conversations, there has been a lot of talk about “bad CGI” in the film. You will also find fans on social media talking about it.

It’s definitely an interesting visual style choice, but it doesn’t really work for some audience members and fans. What do you think of the visual effects style choices in The flash?
