Laika Studios is currently in production on a new stop-motion animated film titled Wild forest. The project is directed by Travis Knightand the film will include an epic battle sequence, which is one of the most challenging things the studio has had to create.

The film follows Prue, a young woman who stumbles upon a mystical and enchanted forest. In the story, “Beyond the city limits of Portland lies Wildwood. You shouldn’t go there. You shouldn’t even know it exists. But Prue McKeel is about to enter this enchanted wonderland. Her little brother Mac has been taken away by a murder of crows deep in the forest and she, along with her hapless classmate Curtis, will bring him back. Prue she might think she’s too old for fairy tales, but she’s just found herself at the center of one. One filled with strange talking animals, rogue bandits, and powerful figures with the darkest of intentions.

Knight recently spoke about the massive battle sequence and how something like this has never been attempted before. He told Empire:

“It’s the hardest thing we’re going through in this film. We’re starting to crumble and tentatively go into, like, ‘Oh God, oh God, oh God, how are we going to do this?’ But I think it will work. And you’ll tell me when the movie’s done, if that’s the case. Stop-motion movies tend to look like they were shot on a tabletop, because they are. Moving a physical object one frame at a time and trying to bring it to life, that’s its own challenge. And then you bring all the kineticism you would get in a live action movie… It’s that hard.

It’s exciting to hear! Can’t wait to actually see how this sequence turns out! Laika makes beautiful stop-motion animated films and I love that they are trying new things that have never been done before in between!

Wild forest features a star-studded voice cast, including Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Jemaine Clement, Maya Erskine, Tantoo Cardinal, Tom Waits, AND Richard E. Grant. It will hit theaters in 2025.
