Hayao Miyazaki is working on his next anime film, How do you live?, for Studio Ghibli for years. This is his latest film and the legendary Japanese animation studio has kept a lot of things secret about it. That secrecy will continue until the film is actually released in theaters.
There really wasn’t much released for the film other than a bird poster. To prevent the film’s secrets from being leaked, Studio Ghibli and its partners will not place any pre-release advertisements or release advanced information.
President and producer of Studio Ghibli Suzuki Toshio explained during an interview with Bungei Shunju magazine that this unusual marketing strategy was put in place to build excitement for fans. Miyazaki hasn’t made a film since the 2013 project The wind rises.
This means that there will be no commercials, trailers or information about the voice cast. This is definitely a unique way to market a movie! Suzuki said, “They want to see for themselves what the film is about. And to do that, they’ll have to go to the theater.
At one point during the interview, the magazine’s editor said the film would be based on How do you livea 1937 Bildungsroman by Genzaburo Yoshino. Over the years we have shared the details of this novel thinking that this is the story the film will tell, but that is not the case at all. According to Suzuki, Miyazaki “only borrowed the title”.
This means that all the plot descriptions we have shared are not Miyazaki’s story How do you live? I will say, and now I’m even more excited!
When previously speaking about the film and why he was making it, Miyazaki said, “I’m making this film because I don’t have the answer.” It is also explained that the film is a gift for Miyazaki’s nephew. Co-founder and producer of Studio Ghibli Toshio Suzuki he said, “It’s his way of saying ‘Grampa is moving on to the next world, but he’s leaving this movie behind.'” Suzuki also described the film as “fantasy on a grand scale”.
The film will be released in Japanese theaters on July 14, 2023. It is not known when How do you live? will be released in the United States.
