Apple unveils its Vision Pro VR headset which is kind of cool but super expensive

Apple unveiled its Vision Pro VR headset as CEO Tim Cook said it is “the first Apple product that you look through and fail.” The headset will unlock a world of great new augmented and virtual reality apps.

Cook went on to say, “I believe augmented reality is a profound technology” and that this new technology will introduce people to new forms of “spatial computing” and even likened the product introduction to the same way the iPhone has introduced smartphones to millions of people.

Vision Pro comes complete with five sensors, six microphones and 12 cameras. Processing power comes from both Apple’s M2 chip and its new R1 chip. The Vision Pro will be able to run all day when plugged into an outlet, but you’ll need a secondary battery pack to use it on the go. The battery only lasts two hours on a charge.

Disney CEO Bob Iger showed up at the launch of Apple’s Vision Pro and called it a “game-changing” platform, which will allow Disney to create “deeply immersive” stories in “previously impossible” ways. Disney even shared a sizzle reel for Vision Pro showcasing various concepts the media company is working on for the product “to bring you real-life magic.” Naturally, Disney+ will be available on Vision Pro on its release day.

Users will be able to navigate the headset using their eyes, hands and voice. Then, for those watching you while wearing the headset, there’s a feature called EyeSight that lets others see a representation of your eyes on the Vision Pro’s external display, that sounds so crazy!

The headset also features Apple’s first 3D camera, which captures spatial video and photos and can act as a “personal cinema” with support for Apple TV+, Apple Arcade games and other Apple services. Apple Vision Pro is also said to change the way you use apps like Notes, Keynote, FaceTime and Messages.

Vision Pro also offers ultra-high resolution, with more pixels to each eye than a 4K television, and provides a newly developed spatial sound system.

The big question is, can Apple’s Vision Pro VR headset actually get people interested in VR, because the VR market is struggling right now. Could it become a popular mainstream technology? The bigger question is, are people actually going to pay $3,499 for this thing!?

As cool as this all sounds, I sure as hell won’t pay that kind of money for it! However, Apple is expected to sell 900,000 VR headsets in the first year. Will you buy one?

A few days before this VR announcement, Meta announced the next generation of their VR headset, the Meta Quest 3, which is priced at just $500.
