We will delve into the twisted annals of cinematic history! Over the centuries, in a truly astounding show of darkness, the horrific act of beheading has reigned as the champion of capital punishment. The macabre art of cutting off people’s heads was once incredibly common and was a form of entertainment.
Of course, when motion capture on film was created, early filmmakers wanted to make a film that showed the act of decapitating a head. These days any slasher movie you watch will show someone getting their head cut off, but as you can imagine, putting this on film for the first time was a shocking thing for people to see!
The first movie I saw that showed someone’s head being cut off was Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade when an unfortunate soldier meets his untimely demise in an eerie temple, ensnared by a huge blade trap. I remember how happily I was shocked and wondered how the hell they did it!
The first beheading ever filmed was in 1895 in a film titled The execution of Mary Queen of ScotsOR The execution of Maria Stuarda“, which is also considered by some to be the world’s first horror film. The film was directed by Alfred Clark and produced by Thomas Edison. It is only 18 seconds of celluloid and stars Robert L. Thomas as the ill-fated Mary But does the trick !As you can imagine, they used some primitive visual effects to make it up.
You can watch a video below that showcases the footage and also offers some additional information.
