After Quentin Tarantino Done pulp Fictionthe director attempted to do a James Bond movie, and his plan was to make an adaptation of the Ian Fleming novel Royal Casino. The director had a vision for this adaptation and would set the story in the 1960s.
At that time, the rights of Royal Casino The novel did not belong to EON Productions, which held the rights to most of the other stories. The rights were held by the Ian Fleming Estate and Tarantino teamed up with Miramax to try and make it happen, but it never worked out. Tarantino explained:
“This is what I wanted to do after Pulp Fiction was making my version of Casino Royale, and it was going to take place in the 60s and it wasn’t a Bond film series. We would have chosen an actor and we would have been one and Done So I thought we could do it. But then it turns out that the Broccoli three years ago figured out that someone was going to try and do what I did. And so what they did was they just made a blanket deal with the Fleming estate and said that: “We have the film rights to everything he wrote. We’ll just give you a bunch of money. This is for every single thing he’s ever written. If someone wants to make a film out of it, they have to come to us.'”
It’s a shame that never happened because I would have loved to see Tarantino direct a James Bond movie! He goes on to share how he would like to see the franchise run. He thinks producers should actually start adapting books into movies, saying:
“So many books have these really classic names and really classic adventures. And for the most part, a lot of them, they never did the book. They never did the stories. They took the plot and maybe the Bond girl or maybe the bad and then went his own way. Tom Mankiewicz just goes his own way. He wrote for a lot of them. I think they shouldn’t remake the movies but really just do the books but do them the way they were written And those would all be brand new.
I agree 100%! I love the James Bond books, and it would be really cool to see those stories adapted into feature films! It’s pretty crazy that they didn’t actually do this because adaptations of these books would be great!
Would you have liked to see Tarantino direct a James Bond film? Who do you think he would have cast as Bond?
