We are about to start the seventh and eighth movie of the Tom Cruise-driven Mission Impossible movie. They each provide plenty of action and adventure, but one of the most memorable scenes in the history of the franchise has to be in the first film in 1996, when Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt falls to the floor of the CIA vault, narrowly missing hit the bottom a. You can see the intensity on his face and he made the movie so hot! But this iconic scene almost didn’t happen, according to Cruise himself.
In a Paramount Movies 25th Anniversary video (via /Film) in 2021, Cruise opened up about the scene, which took a toll on him physically:
“I remember we were running out of time and I got off the ground and kept hitting myself in the face. […] So I went to the stunt guys and said give me, you know, coins. Here in England they have pound coins. So I inserted the pound coins and hung on the cord to see, was I level? And I had to do it. [Director Brian De Palma] it was like, one more, and I’m going to cut it and do it, and I said, ‘I can do it.’ “
As they shot another take, Cruise was balancing on the floor of the vault with pound coins, and still straining and really sweating, while Brian De Palma kept rolling the camera for so long it turned into a situation stall and an endurance test for the actor:
“[I] I went down on the floor and I didn’t touch it, and I remember, there I was, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I didn’t touch it.’ And I was holding it, holding it, holding it, holding it, and I’m sweating, and I’m sweating, and then he just keeps rolling.”
This continued until Cruise heard De Palma laughing off camera and saying, “Okay, cut it.” They had finally nailed the scene, and the rest is cinematic history. This is hardly surprising considering Cruise’s insistence on always doing his own stunts and pushing his physical limits. He is an adrenaline junkie! And his persistence in delivering this scene is part of what made the film great.
