Ben Affleck Reflects on Time Playing Batman, Explains ‘There’s a Double-Edged Sword’

Ben Affleck it actually made for a pretty badass Batman in the DCEU. I enjoyed the role and will see him in action as the Dark Knight one last time in DC The flash movie. While we await the film’s release, the actor recently opened up about his experience playing Batman in Zack Snyderof the DC cinematic universe.

During Zack Snyder Justice League panel, Affleck discussed the long legacy that comes from bringing the Batman character to life saying:

“This part is unique because so many excellent actors have played it and filmmakers have played it and the mythology spans decades after decades, from the Adam West TV series and cartoons and stuff to amazing film and art on it. So it’s much more daunting, in a way. Because whatever else you do, if you’re doing it for the first time, there’s nothing else to stop yourself against, confronted with… no expectations. You have the freedom to go out there and define it, for better or for worse.

Affleck went on to talk about the double-edged sword of his time as Batman and how Snyder’s direction gave him a good atmosphere to tackle the daunting role:

“There’s a double-edged sword at a time like this because you have a lot of tailwind and people have a lot of goodwill and enthusiasm around these characters who have been around in our culture for a long time, but they also have a lot of expectations. So I definitely spent a lot of time thinking about it and agonizing about it, but all the performances where I ended up being able to sleep at night around… Zack creates an extremely comfortable and flowing atmosphere. For me, as a director, that’s the thing. more important than I try to do”.

Affleck had a good run as Batman, and I wish he’d actually made his own solo Batman movie. But DC is moving forward, with James Gunn and Peter Safran leading the charge. I’m excited to see what comes of it, Affleck has brought something new and unique to the character that many fans loved.
