THE WITCHER showrunner explains why they didn’t end the show when Henry Cavill left

When it was shockingly announced Henry Cavill would be leaving The sorcerer series after the third season and with which it had been replaced Liam Hemsworth for season 4, fans wondered why they didn’t just end the show. It seems that without Cavill playing Geralt of Rivia, what’s the point? It’s one of the main reasons fans watch the show, and I imagine that viewership will drop dramatically with season four.

During a recent interview with showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, he explained why they decided to continue the series without Cavill, saying:

“It was time for him in his life to move on. I think we all mourned this in our own way. I mean, we had a chance to get Geralt out and end the show. [But] it’s not something we were willing to do. There are too many stories left to tell. If we replaced Geralt with another Witcher, we’d be leaving the books completely, and I don’t think that’s what anyone wanted.”

With all these stories they want to tell, I guess they’re really hoping that fans will continue to flock to the show without Cavill. It will be interesting to see if they can actually continue the series beyond season 4. He continued on about Liam Hemsworth, saying:

“We’re all excited for Liam to arrive. He’s got some huge shoes to fill, but he’s also got a lot of energy and a lot of excitement about it. It’s obviously a brand new chapter for us. And there’s a lot of feelings involved. But ultimately, we love what we’re doing. So we’ll move forward.”

Now, Cavill is back in the upcoming third season, which begins with the White Wolf reluctantly joining Yennefer as they try to keep Ciri safe. As you can imagine, it won’t be easy for them as everyone on the continent is looking for Ciri. Hissrich went on to say:

“The core of The Witcher is all about family. And this is where our family finally gets a chance to be together for the first time and actually start imagining a future together. And so I was really excited to finally keep that promise to the audience…to get to that place where there could be some happiness. But it’s The Witcher…so obviously it won’t last!”

In The sorcerer Season 3, “while monarchs, wizards and beasts of the continent compete to capture her, Geralt hides Ciri of Cintra, determined to protect his newly reunited family from those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with magical training by Ciri, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where he hopes to learn more about her untapped powers; instead, they find they’ve landed on a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and betrayal. They have to fight back, put everything on the line or risk being lost forever.

Hissrich has also previously said that season 3 feels like the actor’s “most heroic farewell.”

The five episodes of volume 1 of season 3 will be released worldwide on June 29, while volume 2, including the last three episodes of the season, will be released on July 27.
