Indiana Jones and Dial of Fate it’s the fifth film in the series, and it’s just around the corner! Fans have a lot of love for the first three films, and not so much for the fourth (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – 2008). That’s why there’s a lot of anticipation and mixed emotions as this new film rolls its way. But the first reactions to the film’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival have been released, and it looks like it’s going to be a fun movie!
Of variety Clayton Davis said: “Redemption! James Mangold Redeems #IndianaJones with #DialOfDestiny. A farewell to one of the greatest screen characters in cinematic history. Action, laughter, glamour…everything that makes him great. Thanks Harrison Ford (and Phoebe Waller Bridge) for the race. #Cannes2023”
RadioTimes said: “In a movie about the past, it’s only right that there are some references to previous adventures, but Mangold and his writers don’t go overboard with Easter eggs. There’s enough iconography – the whip, the fedora – still within reach out of hand, to make sure you don’t forget you’re watching an Indiana Jones movie. The final reel may require a serious flight of fancy, but unlike those aliens in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it somehow feels like a fit trip to Indy Perhaps the film could have been bolder – it seems sure enough – but fans will leave theaters feeling that their old hero has had one last big outing in him.”
South China Morning Post: “Fans of the adventure series are treated to a film full of Indy staples: action, humor, mystery and his old enemy, the Nazis. Director James Mangold, who replaces Steven Spielberg, brings the character adventures at a near satisfying level, while Ford enjoys reprising the role for one last hurrah… With a few throwbacks (including an underused John Rhys-Davies), Dial of Destiny feels like an old-school Indy romp , more than 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, while trying to capture the upbeat spirit of the originals. With genuine emotion stitched into the story, it’s not just John Williams’ instantly recognizable score that hits the right notes .
Total Film via GamesRadar teased, “There’s an old-fashioned, nostalgic feel to the film, a jolly, trotting journey that once again pits Ford’s intrepid adventurer against the Nazis. Certainly, it makes up for the extravagant Kingdom of 2008’s Crystal Skull, with a more grounded story. Well, at least until the final reel… (no spoilers!)”
The Irish Times: “Let’s put one concern to rest. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate, which premiered at Cannes to great fanfare, is the best film in the series for 15 years. It counts as something of a compliment to say that James Mangold – right down to a gleefully absurd ending – plays like another episode in a squeaky unassuming game… No one with a brain in their head is going to compare Dial of Destiny favorably to the first three films.. But Mangold, director by Logan and 3:10 to Yuma, he knows how to keep his foot on the pedal.”
Steven Spielberg he recently said of the film after an early screening: “Bob Iger did a screening for a lot of Disney executives, and I came to the screening with director James Mangold. Everyone loved the movie. It’s a really, really good ‘Indiana Jones’ movie. I’m really proud of what Jim has done with it.
